In the middle of Ramadan, the moon grew big and round. “Tonight is Gargee’an!” cried Mariam, twirling in sparkly traditional clothes, with an empty cloth bag ready to fill.

After iftar, the street filled with children, lanterns and little drums. Grandma hung the bag around Mariam’s neck. “Sing loudly,” she said, “so the neighbours hear you coming!”
