فتح جدّي صندوقًا خشبيًا قديمًا أمام شمّا. في داخله مشبك صغير من صدف السلحفاة. قال: «هذا فِطام. كان جدّي يضعه على أنفه، فقد كان غوّاصًا يجمع اللؤلؤ!»

Jaddi opened an old wooden chest for Shamma. Inside lay a tiny clip made of turtle shell. “This is a fattam,” he said. “My grandfather wore it on his nose. He was a pearl diver!”

سدّت شمّا أنفها بإصبعيها، وقالت بصوت مضحك: «أنا أيضًا أريد أن أجد لؤلؤة!» ضحك جدّي وقال: «إذن، غدًا نذهب إلى البحر.»

Shamma squeezed a finger and thumb over that little nose and squeaked like a diver: “I wadt to fidd a pearl too!” Jaddi laughed. “Then tomorrow, we go to the sea.”
